This project is a response to West Virginia Legislature Senate Bill 272 effective March 7, 2018, which all enables the Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) to establish Community Overdose Response Demonstration Pilot Projects in WV counties. In collaboration with community partners in both counties, WVU Health Sciences Center Eastern Division will pilot a demonstration project in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties. The project will build upon community assets and develop a coordinated community action response to prevent and combat the impact of Substance Use Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder in Berkeley and Jefferson families. The project will implement evidence-based practices across the spectrum from prevention to recovery in each county and expand upon the existing initiatives and programs while launching new initiatives.
Goal: Develop and implement innovative, evidence based initiatives in a community response to prevent overdose in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.
Objective 1: Establish and launch rural outreach teams to bring services and education directly to communities (Community Outreach Teams)
Activities:
1. Organize one rural outreach team each in Berkeley and Jefferson County
2. Establish a team able to deliver comprehensive care via case managers, licensed behavioral health providers, and peer recovery coaches
3. Cross-train the members of the team to be able to provide public health services and work with an existing recovery coach network to provide job and life skills training to individuals in need
4. Launch the teams in each county to receive referrals to deliver comprehensive harm reduction, prevention education (including but not limited to vaccines, infectious disease, family planning, etc.), behavioral health services, and public health services to individuals and their families in need.
