Health Law & Ethics

Health Law & Ethics explores a wide range of legal and ethical issues that are relevant in healthcare settings. Session 1 will focus on law. It will include a review of the sources of law and its relationship with ethics. We will discuss trends in the application of criminal law to healthcare facilities and practitioners. Participants will learn to distinguish negligent torts from intentional torts, describe elements of a contract, and be familiar selected government regulation for quality of care and cost containment. Participants will also identify and analyze the rights, duties, and potential liabilities of various groups in health care settings (e.g., health care administrative staff & health care providers) for the purpose of risk prevention. Session 1 will end with a discussion of selected labor laws to healthcare facilities

Session 2 will focuses on ethics. Participants be exposed to and apply various guidelines for making ethical decisions, allowing individuals to identify their preferred model. Skill in making ethical decisions will be reviewed.  Administrative ethical issues will be explored. Participants will discuss issues relating to patient self-determination (e.g., informed consent, right to refuse, & HIPAA). We will end Session 2 with a discussion of end of life issues.
