Sexuality in older adults has typically been the elephant in the middle of the room, that we have not addressed as social service practitioners. However, as the Baby Boomers age, as modern science and health care interventions enhance and extend humans activity levels and quality of life, it is a topic we must both acknowledge and address.

This workshop will present information on how to broach this sensitive topic with older adults and their family members, as well as how to educate older adults and informal and formal caregivers regarding respectful and safe sexual activity in a variety of living settings, the vital role that sexual expression and activity plays in ones emotional and physical well-being, the specific issues faced by older adults who identify as something other than heterosexual, and the reality that sexual activity among older adults does exist and needs to be addressed as part of their care plans in community-based and residential settings.
