Dear Potential Author
We are conducting a call for papers related to Military Social Work and
the preparing communities and processionals for working with returning
troops, veterans and families. There are two types of papers published
in our journal. The standard academic research variety and a more
casual article which we call Notes from the Field. A further
explanation is provided on our website and the details and note for the
special edition Editor is below. Our website outlining the different
types of submission is http://www.profdevjournal.org/submissions.html.
Our goal is to finalize the publication within the year.
Special Issue Announcement
The International Journal of Continuing Social Work Education
Focus of the Special Edition:
Preparing Communities and Professionals for Working with Returning
Troops, Veterans, and Families
Purpose and Focus:
This special edition of IJCSWE will focus on the public health
challenge of how states and the nation can develop resources and build
capacity at all levels for dealing with returning troops, veterans and
their families. The issue will examine the complex and diverse issues of
helping troops, veterans, and their families transition home and
reintegrate into civilian life.
As the war presses on its impact on military troops and their families
has focused the public’s interest on the invisible wounds of the war
and the high costs of war for our troops, veterans and their families.
The current public health challenge -- When military troops return home
will families and communities be ready?-- requires research and
programmatic initiatives at the federal, state, and community levels.
Over 2 million U.S. troops have deployed to the wars and as many as one
in every three return with one of the major signature conditions- mild
traumatic brain injury, post traumatic stress disorder, or major
depression. The number of troops at risk underscores the importance of
service innovations. Studies also indicate that service providers need
training to effectively work with this population. Further research is
also needed on models of care that are effective including peer-to-peer
models of service provision.
This special issue will address questions such as the following:
What is the scope of this public health challenge and what role will
social work and other health care professionals play in responding to
these challenges? How have states responded to the challenge of working
with the reintegration of troops and veterans and to preparing
professionals as service providers? How has technology assisted in
developing programmatic innovations for working with troops and
veterans? What partnerships have been forged to build the capacity for
innovative service delivery? What models of care work with the complex
educational, employment, health, mental health, legal, and social
challenges facing troops, veterans, and their families?
Guest Editor:
Dr. Katherine Selber, Professor, School of Social Work, Texas State
University-San Marcos has worked extensively with troops, veterans, and
their families. She has also provided technical assistance on program
development to non-profit and state agencies that provide services to
this population. Her work on developing a university-based model for
helping student veterans transition into and through the university is
widely acclaimed as being one of the best in the nation. Dr. Selber is
also a military family member with an active duty son on his fourth
deployment. Articles should be sent to Dr. Selber at [log in to unmask]
