The CHHA AmeriCorps Education Award Program provides eligible
community
organizations with the opportunity to receive post-secondary students
as
interns. The interns will serve in the following capacity:
implementing
special events, meeting direct tourism enhancement needs, stewardship
of
historic and cultural resources, and/or volunteer management and
recruitment. The AmeriCorps Education Award members will also receive
training about the value of national service and heritage tourism.

In return for the students’ services, AmeriCorps members receive an
education award that can be used to pay for qualified student loans or
future educational expenses at qualified institutions of higher
learning
including trade schools. The amount of the education award is dependent
on
the length of the member’s service. CHHA AmeriCorps Interns will
receive an
Education Award of $2,362.50 or $1,250 for completing 900 hours or 450
hours
of service, respectively.

*The Coal Heritage Highway Authority* AmeriCorps Umbrella Project
promotes
and enhances tourism and community and economic development
activities,
resource development, outreach and education, and historic preservation
and
interpretation. Coal Heritage AmeriCorps members strengthen
communities
along the Coal Heritage Trail, a national scenic byway passing through
Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming, McDowell, and Mercer Counties and within
the
National Coal Heritage Area, a federally designated area of national
historic significance, encompassing 13 counties in southern West
Virginia.
Visit www.coalheritage.org.

AmeriCorps programs currently provide opportunities for 75,000
Americans to
give back in an intensive way to their communities and country each
year.
The newly signed Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act will increase
this
number to 250,000 in less than a decade. AmeriCorps State and
National members
serve with more than 2,900 national and local nonprofit and community
groups.
