Long Term Care Social Work Conference

11 Units of Continuing Education for SW
Learn about the role of the Ombudsman and Resident’s
Rights from Suzanne Messenger, the West Virginia
State Long-Term Care Ombudsman. She served from
2002 as the Associate Director for the Regional Long
Term Care Ombudsman Program until 2008 when she
was made Director. She is a graduate of West Virginia
University College of Law and holds a BS degree in
Medical Technology from the same university.
A panel of experts will present “Community Resources
for Residents with Behaviors.” Panelists include
Suzanne Messenger and Deanna L. Kramer RN, MS, NHA, who currently works
as a Program
Manager for the Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification.
A graduate of Frostburg
State University with an MS in Counseling Psychology, she holds an
Associate Degree in Nursing
from the University of Charleston and has completed certification as a
medico-legal death
investigator. She is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator. Paul
Kuryla, MD, has been in
practice as a family medicine physician in Dunbar, WV for 19 years as
well as the Medical
Director at Golden Living Center-Riverside, St. Albans, WV for 18
years. He received his
education at Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington. Liz
Ransom, Outreach
Coordinator for Thomas Behavioral Health is a licensed Social Worker
and Certified Recreational
Therapist. Liz is a graduate of West Virginia State College and does
free behavioral assessments
and interventions for quality of life for seniors. Jennifer Jeffrey
will also participate.
Information on the POST form and Advance Directives will be presented
by Jennifer Jeffrey,
Social Services Director and Interim Executive Director at Golden
Living Center-Riverside. In
addition to managing all advance directives in the facility, she
handles referrals for behavioral
monitoring and behavior services. She holds a Master of Social Work
degree from West Virginia
University.
Medicaid Eligibility will be presented by Scott Wyatt, owner, West
Virginia Medicaid Advisors,
Clarksburg, WV. Scott’s company helps families qualify for Medicaid
without losing all their
financial assets while also saving their homes. A graduate of Robert
Morris University, Scott has
been doing Medicaid planning for 10 years.

Long Term Care Social Work Conference
Discharge Planning will be presented by
Kathy Samples, LSW. Kathy served as
Social Services Director and Discharge
Planner at Teays Valley Center for the past 2 1/2 years. A recent
part-time employee at Oak Ridge
Center, Kathy travels to other facilities as a consultant with Health
Consultants Plus, using her 8
years of experience as a long term care social worker and discharge
planner. She is a participant
on the Genesis Social Work Practice Council and a graduate of Glenville
State College.
Deatra “Dee” Adkins, RN, BSN, NHA will present an update for social
workers on the QIS survey
process. Deatra has 15 years of long term care experience. She has
served as a Director of
Nursing, Corporate Nurse Consultant and Nursing Home Administrator. She
is currently the Director
of Clinical Services for the West Virginia Health Care Association. She
received a BSN degree
from Marshall University.

Kelley Johnson, MSW, serves as Program Manager for Nursing Facilities
and ICF/MR, Bureau
for Medical Services. She has 10 years experience in the field of
social work and seven in long
term care. She received her BS in Social Work from West Virginia State
College and an MSW
from West Virginia University.
Douglas W. Fischer is a licensed psychologist and consultant for the
West Virginia Bureau for
Medical Services. He conducts PASRR Level II Evaluations and assists in
the administration of the
Level II Program. He is involved with ICF/MR eligibility determinations
and the MR/DD Waiver
Program. He works in private practice where he provides individual
psychotherapy and
psychological evaluation services.
WVHCA complies with licensing certification requirements by awarding
actual clock hours for attendance at seminars.
If for any reason the session does not last for the proposed schedule,
participants will receive credit for the number of
clock hours actually spent in class, minus breaks and meals.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations received more than 48 hours before
the program receive full
refund, less a $25 administrative fee. Cancellations within 48 hours of
the program are charged
at 50% of the registration fee. Registrants who fail to attend are
responsible for the full fee.
Substitutions are welcome to replace a registrant at no additional
cost.
