This workshop will provide information to clinicians about self-injury,
including behavioral definitions and the implications in diagnosis.
Factors that contribute to this behavior will be discussed, as well as
the impact of popular culture. Attendees will be provided with current
information on the neurobiology and pharmacological treatment of
self-injurious behaviors. Attendees will learn psychotherapeutic
principles and practice techniques discussed.
Presenters:
Dr. Melissa Albert is an Assistant Professor at WVU Departments of
Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and Pediatrics. She has special
interests in pediatric illness with co-morbid psychiatric disorders,
family emotional well-being, and school problems.
Janie Howsare, LICSW, MPA is an Assistant Professor at the WVU
Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and a Supervisor of the
Social Work Field Placement. Special interests include:
child/adolescent therapy, family therapy, adolescent substance abuse,
mood disorders, behavior disorders, and divorce.
