Clinical Supervision
March 17, 2008, 9am-11am, Jerry West Lounge, West Virginia University,
Morgantown, WV
Eric Rankin, PhD, Professor, WVU Department of Behavioral Medicine &
Psychiatry
CEUs: 2 Social Work hours, 2 LPC hours
Registration Fee: $25
Target Audience: Clinicians already providing clinical supervision to
trainees in one or more mental health professions (e.g., social work,
psychology, counseling, psychiatry, etc.). Clinicians interested in or
being considered for supervisory roles would also be appropriate.

Description: This workshop will present a psycho-dynamically informed
developmental approach to clinical supervision. Areas of interest will
include conceptualizing levels of clinician development and goals for
professional growth, strategies to tailor supervision to the individual
needs of the supervisee (e.g., counter transference, “parallel
process”) as well as techniques to identify and enhance the relational
“fit” between clinician and supervisor. Clinical material will be
presented to highlight aspects of both the theory and practice of
clinical supervision. Participants are also highly encouraged to bring
examples from their own experience as supervisors and/or supervisees.

Learning Objectives: As a result of attending this workshop,
participants will be able to become familiar with a developmental model
for conceptualizing and addressing the professional needs of their
trainees; become more familiar with the dynamically charged relational
aspects of supervision and monitor the ongoing fit between supervisor
and supervisee; and enhance the professional development of supervisees
and their own clinical (supervisory) competence.
