Disaster Social Work:  When All Hell Breaks Loose

Dr. Michael Zakour, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Social Work, Associate Director, the NOVA Institute, School of Applied Social Sciences, West Virginia University:

Dr. Michael Zakour will outline the mental health effects of disasters, in particular post-traumatic stress.  Techniques for mitigation and treatment of post-traumatic stress such as critical incidents stress debriefing and other group modalities will be discussed.  Growth and resilience factors will be highlighted, as well as the macro aspects of handling disaster mental health.

Dr. Brian Gerber, PhD, Assistant Professor, Division of Public Administration, School of Applied Social Sciences, West Virginia University: 

Dr. Brian Gerber will provide an overview of the needs of disabled persons during emergency and disaster incidents.  A discussion will follow on how government agencies plan and prepare for emergencies/disasters, and what those processes imply for the particular case of disabled persons.  Finally, an outline of how research on these topics can be used to promote better (best) practices to more effectively address the needs of persons with disabilities.
