Yen Hoang Thi Vo’s Biography:
Yen Hoang Thi Vo, Director of Disability Resource and Development (DRD)
located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, graduated with a Master degree in
Human Development from the University of Kansas in May, 2004. During
her graduate studies, she was a first or joint author on a number of
scholarly publications on advocacy and identification of concerns for
people with disabilities. She also holds two Bachelor degrees, one in
Education from the University of Education and another in Agricultural
Economics from the University of Economics, both universities in Ho Chi
Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Subsequent to her Master degree, Ms. Vo has
earned certificates in Social Work, Community Asset Building, Community
Driven Development, and Institutional Development from several
international universities and programs, including the USA Fulbright
Program. As a former scholarship recipient of the Ford Foundation for
study in the United States, upon her return to Vietnam, she decided to
use her education and training to create positive results for persons
with disabilities in her native country and to work toward a cultural
change of attitude by Vietnamese people toward persons with
disabilities. Her goal is to promote persons with disabilities as
participants in society at large for employment and to provide
opportunities for those who have been marginalized because of their
disabilities to demonstrate their abilities in meaningful activities
that will socially and economically integrate them with the community.
Ms. Vo founded the Disability Resource and Development Center
at HCMC Open University in order to assist and bring together people who
share the same goals to provide a resource for persons with
disabilities. Since beginning her work in Vietnam, she has established
the first accessible E-Library on Disability in Vietnam and has created
Scholarship and Mentoring Programs for students with disabilities. Ms.
Vo is also a faculty member of the Sociology Department at HCMC Open
University and lectures at other universities. She has been the Country
Representative and Coordinator of the International Fellowship Program
for the Ford Foundation in Vietnam. Ms. Vo regularly publishes articles
on topics concerning people with disabilities in Vietnamese newspapers,
is a frequent presenter at workshops, and is an invited guest on
Vietnamese radio and television programs in which she discusses issues
concerning people with disabilities and using their abilities in
society.
