Center, Large Classroom, Martinsburg, WV

Morning Session: Managing Better Meetings (Whether You’re the Chair
or a Participant)
Dave Miller, EdD, President, PHOENIX International
3 Social work hours, 3 CECNPM hours (Core Area: Human Resource
Development – Management)

This workshop is for people who already run meetings or need to learn
how to do so. It is especially for those who are genuinely open to
learning about how well they conduct meetings (within their
organizations, with professional colleagues, in their churches or
synagogues, and in neighborhood or community groups) and want to
improve. It’s also for people who are subject to other’s badly-run
meetings and are willing to risk trying polite and subtle ways to
improve those meetings. The workshop will - through discussion, role
play, and handouts – help participants answer the following
questions:

WHAT? What makes for a good meeting?
SO WHAT? How well do I run meetings? What can I do to improve them?
How can I get others to run better meetings?
NOW WHAT? What am I going to do tomorrow with what I’ve
learned/relearned?

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants
will have identified the features of effective and ineffective meetings;
identified specific strengths in the way they conduct meetings, as well
as features they think they should add; analyzed and practiced socially
appropriate behaviors that may improve the ways others lead meetings;
practiced evaluating a meeting; and planned the application of their
skills back in the real world.

Afternoon Session: Nonprofit Administration - Some Keys to Thriving in
Difficult Times
R. Scott Graham, MBA, CBHE, President, Bhealth Management, LLC and
Associate, Criterion Health, Inc.
2 CECNPM hours (Core Area: Board of Directors/Governance – Board
Self Governance)

It is possible for nonprofit organizations to thrive in difficult
economic times. From governance to outcomes management, there are
inexpensive ways to be successful even when funds for operating programs
are scarce. This workshop is packed with tips on how to make your
nonprofit organization more effective and efficient in troubled times.
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear one of the co-authors of “The
No-Money Manager” explain why your organization can thrive too.
Recipients will receive “take home tools” including a sample
conflict of interest policy for organizational bylaws and a balanced
scorecard template.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants
will understand the implication of Sarbanes/Oxley’s conflict of
interest regulations for nonprofit organizations; have tools to recruit
Board Members with “Cash, Clout & Competence”; know how to support
Board Members in raising funds for their organization; know how to
develop an outcomes management tool for their organization; and know how
to involve their Board Members in a strategic planning process.
