In recent years, both practical need and theoretical developments have
converged to place a greater emphasis on the role that networking and
collaboration plays in achieving individual, organizational, and
community objectives. In resource scarce environments where the
challenges are complex and solutions require collaborative approaches,
it is crucial that organizations have the capacity and skills to reach
out to others to share efforts, resources, and success. This workshop
investigates the importance of building
and maintaining networks at the community level and examining the
nature and context of collaboration. Special focus will be given to
recent developments in health and human services delivery in West
Virginia.

Violence and Children: Responding “in the Best Interests of the
Child”
October 3, 2008, 9am-5pm, Gaston Caperton Center, Room 306, Clarksburg,
WV
Kathleen Carrick, MSW, PhD Candidate, University of Pittsburgh School
of Social Work
CEU’s: 7 Social Work hours, 6.5 LPC hours
Registration Fee: $75 (Early bird rate $67.50 by September 15, 2008)

Often child advocates return children to homes where abuse may
continue. We will explore abuse, experiences and typical social service
interventions from a child's point of view. The legacy of viewing
children as property affects slower interventions at the hands of a
family member rather than stranger violence.

Topics include evolution of sexual and domestic violence clinical
responses; indicators of abuse in children; immediate and long-term
health/mental needs; community responses to crimes against children; and
national abuse resources. We will examine changes in medical practice,
investigations, court practices and legislation that have improved
prosecution of violent crimes committed against children. We will
discuss ways to protect and care for ourselves as we advocate for
changes in "the best interests of the children."
