Description of session:
This course will provide the student with a framework of knowledge,
values, skills and experiences for spiritually sensitive social work
practice. Students will develop insight and skills for responding
competently and ethically to diverse spiritual and religious
perspectives in social work practice. We will pay particular attention
to practice with clients who have experienced a death in the family,
addiction, physical and sexual abuse and incarceration. We will explore
the concept of spiritual transformation as well as the impact of
religious fundamentalism on social work practice. The primary objective
of this course is to enable students to gain awareness and respect for
their own as well as their client’s spiritual values and religious
beliefs and how those beliefs can help create change and healing.
Students of all religious and spiritual traditions are welcome in this
course.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will
be able to identify, appreciate and interpret their own spirituality and
religious tradition; identify and respect diverse religious or spiritual
experiences and the implications for social work practice; develop
skills for implementing spiritual assessments; gain awareness and
understanding of both the supportive and oppressive aspects of religious
and spiritual practices as they relate to issues of gender, ethnicity,
culture, age, and sexual orientation; and critically analyze recent
research on religion and spirituality in social work practice.
