The Power of a Story: Using story-telling to create social change
May 8, 2007
Bridgeport Conference Center at Charles Pointe
Bridgeport, WV
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
There is no form of communication more powerful than a well-told story. Our
culture is shaped by the stories we tell, and there is evidence that our
brains respond instinctively to a good narrative. A well-told story can
create understanding and initiate action that supports social change. This
seminar and workshop looks at ways to frame stories for the news media,
lawmakers, community supporters and funders.
Guest speakers are Joanne Edgar, co-founder of Ms. Magazine and former
communications director of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation and Burnis
Morris, author of "A Journalists Guide for Covering Nonprofit Organizations
and their People" and journalism professor at Marshall University. During
the workshop, each participant will develop a story to use in their
community to help promote their issue or program.
CEUs will be available through the West Virginia Prevention Resource Center.
The cost to attend is $40 for an individual and $50 for two people from the
same organization. Graduates of the Good Beginnings Media Institute attend
for free. The meeting is sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia, The
West Virginia Children's Trust Fund, Childspeak Creative and the Marshall
University W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
