For years, social workers have fought to have their practice
recognized as a professional discipline. One of the current arguments
is “if being a profession means having and using special knowledge and
skills others do not have, are we as a profession doing a good job of
equipping ourselves and our students with such expertise? A second
argument centers around the “proof” of such expertise, in other
words, how do we provide concrete evidence of our knowledge and skills,
and the impact we have upon society?”
Evidence-based practice is a recent idea in professional social
work that might be an answer to this concern. It describes a more
accountable, ethical, and scientific way to practice social work. At the
core of evidence-based practice is the question of substantiating what
we do as a profession. This workshop on evidence-based practice provides
an opportunity to clarify this new idea of practice, a chance to explore
the extent to which we may already be practicing it and methods to
identify new ways to best incorporate it in our field curriculum and
social work practice.
Agencies and programs which host social work students in their
field internships already have a good resource for the development and
implementation of evidence-based practice activities. This workshop is
designed to help participants maximize those resources already in place,
and/or identify how to incorporate such resources into their agencies
and programs.
Participants should be ready to discuss those areas of their
practice in which they wish to incorporate evidence-based practice, as
well as methods already utilized to do so, both internal and external
(mandated by funding sources).
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this workshop, participants should be able to;
1) Define evidence-based practice.
2) Articulate an understanding of the importance of evidence-based
practice.
3) Discuss the process of evidence based practice.
4) Identify ways to incorporate evidence-based practice in their
work as field supervisors.
5) Identify ways to incorporate evidence-based practice in their
work as social workers.
