2007 Lawrence W. Kaplan Lecture in Conflict Resolution

"Cultural Fluency: A Core Competency for Mediators"

Guest Lecturer: Michelle LeBaron

Tuesday, March 27, 2007
5:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Omni William Penn, Pittsburgh

Reception with hors d'oeuvres and cash bar before Lecture
CLE approval pending

When conflict arises, mediators sometimes ignore the role that culture plays
in shaping the communication among participants. Michelle LeBaron believes
that cultural "fluency" is an essential skill for all mediators and third
parties engaged in conflict resolution. Cultural fluency means applying
understandings of diverse cultural starting points and translating them for
others. Professor LeBaron will discuss how cultural fluency, when skillfully
applied by mediators, helps address power imbalances and prevents the
escalation of destructive or negative relational patterns. She will discuss
ways to increase our cultural fluency and will offer practical tools and
strategies for applying it in practice.

Please join us for an evening dedicated to providing a forum for critical
thinking about the mediation field and fostering collegiality among members
of the conflict resolution community.

Registration deadline is March 20, 2007
