Concord University in Athens, WV has several continuing education
workshops available through March 2007.  All sessions are approved for
social work CEs and most are approved for counselors.

All sessions are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m, with an hour break for
lunch on your own.

 Appalachian Culture
This workshop will provide an overview of culture, diversity
and cultural assimilation. It will include in-depth discussions
regarding universal and non-universal cultural traits as well as
cultural development and cultural relativity. It will conclude with an
analysis of cultural behaviors in the workplace.

 Developmental Disabilities Related Issues in Clinical Practice
This seminar will explore contemporary issues and approaches in
supporting persons who have developmental disabilities. The seminar will
focus on: the underlying principles of integration, independence,
inclusion, productivity, and self-determination; some lessons learned
from the history of the treatment of people; the phenomena and effects
of the devaluation of people with developmental disabilities; the
effects of achieving valued social roles; some strategies to assist
individuals to achieve fulfilling and 
productive lives and the public policy and implications.

 Advanced Ethical Issues

A brief overview of the use of ethics differentially across fields of
practice will be presented. A working paradigm will be explained. It
will be a workshop assumption that participants know basic ethics and
ethics specific to their profession. Therefore, a significant amount of
time will be devoted to discussing and possibly resolving ethical
dilemmas brought from the field. Those who sign up will be requested to
submit current ethical issues and dilemmas confronting them.

 The Changing Nature of Change and how We Change
This workshop will explore how constant change has become an integral
part of out professional lives and how we not only live and adapt but
harness change. Participants will explore their own patterns of change
and responses to change and learn new approaches. The workshop will also
cover aspects of organizational change and how we can use the
predictable and unpredictable changes to enhance services to clients.

 Assessment and Diagnosis of Mental Illness
This workshop will include training in specific techniques to elicit
clinical information from clients (clinical interviewing and
standardized assessment instruments) to assist in establishing a
clinical diagnosis and methods for clinical decision-making to assist
with the differential diagnoses.

 Building a Motivating Environment
In the course of effective human resource management, a leader,
manager, or supervisor must be able to see the results of motivation

affirmation, caring, and concern have to be cultivated within the
environment of trust. This workshop will seek to develop each of these
and other points in order to provide attendees with helpful tools to
take back to their places of work
