"One Night Without a Home" Awareness Sleep Out - 11/15
On Tuesday, November 15, 2007, the WV Mental Health Consumers
Association and the Kanawha Valley Collective will be sponsoring a "One
Night Without a Home" Awareness Sleep Out at Magic Island in Charleston.
This event is part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
"One Night" is an opportunity for residents to spend a night outside to
discuss, think, and learn about homelessness. Although one night outside
can in no way simulate homelessness, this awareness-raising activity
will promote advocacy and education for those with the fewest resources.
The program will begin at 8:00 PM and include speakers, a candlelight
vigil, live music, and facilitated discussion groups (including a group
specifically for children). Additionally the West Virginia independent
film, "On the River's Edge", a documentary following the lives of
squatters on the riverbank just west of Huntington's Harris River Front
Park will be screened. The formal program will conclude by midnight
when folks will be encouraged to bed down for the night.
National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week -- November 11-17 -- is
a national endeavor to promote education, action, and awareness about
hunger and homelessness. Other events include the 21st Annual
Thanksgiving Dinner to Aid the Homeless benefitting the YWCA Sojourners
Shelter and Roark Sullivan Lifeway Center on November 12 and the Big
Bean Dinner 2007 benefitting the Religious Coalition for Community
Renewal on November 15 (preceding "One Night").
