First session: Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse
Presenter: Hernando Escandon
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (90 minutes)
Description:
This session will focus on the relationship between Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse which is complicated and is therefore frequently misunderstood. Many professionals who specialize in treating problems associated with Domestic Violence have inadequate training about the impact that substance abuse problems can have on both individuals and families.
Paradoxically, many professionals who specialize in treating substance abuse problems also suffer misconceptions about the dynamics common in relationships where domestic violence is present, as well as the degree to which a substance abuse problem can influence a person to perpetrate violent or abusive behavior.
Because these two serious problems frequently coexist within the same family systems, this presentation will attempt to broaden the participants’ knowledge of the relationship between them. It is the presenter’s belief that knowledge of the relationship between these problems can serve to improve the effectiveness and appropriateness of the treatment that participants subsequently provide to those who are affected by both problems.

Second session: Note Taking and Report Writing
Presenter: Alice Ondrusek
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (90 minutes)
Description:
This session will present specific information for people employed as police officers, nurses, and social workers on how to take adequate notes from Domestic Violence victims and how to prepare comprehensive reports on domestic violence cases in order to provide sufficient information for the proper action to be taken by authoritized professional employees. Upon completion of the workshop participants will be knowledgeable about obtaining the proper information; preparing written notes from this information; maintaining the proper perspective in dealing with the case; remaining objective in reporting; and preparing clear, concise, and complete reports.
