Title: "Our Invisible Heroes: Rural Veterans, Implications for Social
Work"
Presenter: Hilda Heady, MSW, Associate Vice-President for Rural Health
at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia
University
The purpose of this presentation is to help the audience become aware
of the issues faced by rural veterans and their families in our country.
The content will focus upon the role of rural and minority people in
military service, their social, health, and psychological needs, and
various means of advocacy for improved services to this special
population. The content will be presented in a lecture format, with
slides of photograph and text, and a question and answer session
following the presentation.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be given information about the
role of rural and minority people in military service through the
history of the US; the values and culture of rural people concerning
military service; the implications for rural social workers and human
service workers concerning rural veterans and their families; an
overview of the health and mental health needs of various generations of
veterans and their families; and an update on national advocacy efforts
and legislations concerning services for rural veterans.
