As of 2005, the third week in October (14th-20th this year) in West Virginia is Disability History week. http://www.legis.state.wv.us/Bill_Text_HTML/2006_SESSIONS/RS/BILLS/hb4491%20enr.htm for details, but basically, the youth of WV had the opportunity to pass a piece of legislation, and they chose to mandate that the public school systems must incorportate something in their curriculum during the third week of Oct. focusing on the history of persons with disabilities.
NWVCIL, and Compeer, support the youth's effort and want to ensure that educators and the community have the resources to accommodate this endeavor.
We will be hosting a series of events during the third week of Oct. We plan to have a series of articles in the local papers, sponsor public events, and conduct presentations within the schools.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
- Are you already doing something with your organiation during this week that would tie in with the theme? (Is there a staff meeting, conference, forum, fundraiser, etc. going on that week where you (or we) can present info on Disability History?) Can we help promote your activities to increase community access and awareness?
- If you are not already doing something, would you like to? We need volunteers to help organize and bring attendence to the events we are planning. Or, please feel free to organize your own innovative Disability History activity.
- We are planning to attend the next Board of Education meeting, but if you are aware of and have contacts for any other education outlets (Adult Learning, Early Education, etc.) that might benefit from this project, please let us know.
Thank you so much for your support!
