SAMHSA Announces Availability of Drugs, Alcohol and HIV/AIDS: A
Consumer
Guide for African Americans
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
announces the availability of "Drugs, Alcohol and HIV/AIDS: A Consumer
Guide for
African Americans". This Guide is a companion piece to "Drugs, Alcohol
and
HIV/AIDS: A Consumer Guide", which was published in 2006. That brochure
discussed
the issue of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS generally; this Guide focuses
on these
issues as they specifically affect the African-American community. It
is
designed for substance abuse treatment counselors to use with or
distribute to
African-American clients who may be involved in risk behaviors
associated with
HIV/AIDS.
The four-page brochure explains the increased risk of HIV transmission
among
people who actively use substances and stresses the importance of
seeking
treatment for both substance use and possible HIV-related health
issues. Helpful
phone numbers and Web links, including culturally focused
organizations, are
listed on the back of the brochure.
