..from our friends at WV NASW.....

I wanted to pass along the following information re upcoming events and
a
grant opportunity:

David Louis, the author of "Scars that Can Heal", will be doing a
presentation at John Marshall High School in Moundsville on August
20th. Three free CEs
are offered. Following is the press release that was sent out on this

event:

Can a new book help children in America's foster care system find
permanent
families? In Hawaii, it has happened. Now the author of the new book,
Scars
That Can Heal, has traveled across the country to see if that result
can be
duplicated here in West Virginia. He is speaking to social workers,
foster parents
and children. All week, Author David Louis has made presentations based
on his
book to send the message: It is never too late to find a home. He
exclaims
in detail that for orphans, their need to have a family doesn't ever go
away
because they get older.

David aged out of foster care after 30 placements in various
state-funded
agencies and changed schools 19 times before his 18th birthday-when the
state of
California released him to his own custody. He became a counselor and
has
worked with children for more than 10 years. David said, "The
statistics and
individual stories of current foster children prompted me to expose my
own painful
past in hopes that good people will step forward to affect change for
these
powerless ones."

David is the Executive Director of Non-Profit Heart Gallery Hawaii, and
will
be coordinating with the Heart Gallery of West Virginia to make a
public
presentation at John Marshall High School to help our community realize
that there
are children in our own neighborhoods that want a "Forever Family".

What: Public Presentation
Who: David Louis
When: August 20th, 2007 , 6p.m.-9 p.m.
Where: John Marshall High School

BACKGROUND OF ORGANIZATION AND EVENT

About the Heart Gallery: The Heart Gallery ideal is to connect

foster children free for adoption with adoptive parents. Sometimes
called
"Marketing the idea of adopting from foster care"- the Heart Galleries
replace the
typical "mug shots" in a case file with beautiful, insightful and even
humorous
photos that are taken by professional photographers that volunteer
their time
and resources. The portraits they create are exhibited in prestigious
art
galleries and museums across the country and attended by prospective
adoptive
parents. Today, there are 90 Heart Galleries in 47 states. The Heart
Galleries
have made monumental positive impacts on adoption, finding homes for
older
foster children and sibling groups that are often forgotten and forced
to age out
of the System. In some states, the Heart Gallery exhibits have doubled
or
tripled the national adoption averages- New Jersey saw an 800%
increase!

“Social Emotional Development: The Precursor For All Learning”

Presenter: Betsy Thigpen

Tuesday, August 21, 2007
8:30-3:30- Ramada Inn

The goal of this presentation is to increase social workers information
on
the social emotional development needs of young children to improve

are linked
to social emotional needs being unmet.
These behaviors than impact their ability to participate in school
learning
and play activities.

Betsy Thigpen has BS in Social Work and Master in Child Development.
She is an Early Education and Management Specialist at Western Kentucky

Grant Opportunity
This is a friendly reminder that Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia is
currently offering two different grant opportunities to support
worthwhile projects
that help prevent child abuse and neglect in West Virginia. The
deadline for
applications is August 15, 2007.

The Good Beginnings Mini-Grant Program will provide grants of up to
$1,000
per year to fund creative strategies for preventing child abuse and
neglect.
Applications may be submitted by public or private institutions and
faith-based
communities.

In addition, community teams are invited to apply to join our
successful
Partners In Prevention Initiative, a statewide network of community
teams
implementing various community projects and working together to keep
children safe. Up
to ten new community teams will be accepted this year, and
participating
teams will receive grants of up to $7,500 / year to support their work.
 Eligible
teams must include at least three organizations working together as a
new or
existing team in a community.
