Brief Description:
This position is responsible for family and consumer science and 4-H
youth development programming in Monongalia County. Monongalia County
has a population of approximately 81,000 and the county seat is
Morgantown. Teaching, research, and public service efforts will focus on
solving problems facing families and communities, such as health
education, youth development, healthy relationships, and wellness.
In addition, the position will supervise the 4-H and youth programs,
including Energy Express, and Nutrition Outreach Program employees. This
is accomplished through extensive collaboration with agencies, schools,
and civic groups.
The positions will report to the Families and Health program unit but
will work closely with the 4-H Youth Development program unit. The
assignment will be split as approximately families and health and 4-H
youth development.
Currently there is one agricultural faculty who serves as the County
Program Coordinator (CPC), one 4-H program assistant, one agricultural
program assistant, a Nutrition Outreach Instructor, and two secretarial
support staff in Monongalia County.
Major Responsibilities:
The person selected for this position will be responsible for assessing
needs, conducting relevant applied research, and developing Extension
education programs in Monongalia County in the areas of families,
health, and youth development. In addition to planning and implementing
family, health, and youth programs, the agent will assist appropriate
local agencies; provide pertinent research-based information to the
public; and network with the local school systems. This position will
fulfill the organization’s mission through improved collaboration with
agencies, schools, and civic groups that focus on serving the needs of
families and youths. The agent serving in this position will focus on
developing linkages to help cultivate family and consumer science and
4-H youth development programs in Monongalia County . Specific
responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Work to improve the health status of youths, adults, and families
through collaborative relationships and family and health education
programs.
* Provide leadership (advisory capacity) and educational content to
the CEOS organization
* Support the development of Extension educational programs focused
on adult and teen volunteer leadership and character development,
including the recruitment, training, and management of a diverse base of
volunteers. Enhance the 4-H youth program through the involvement of
youth groups and adult volunteers in a variety of educational
experiences focused on life skills.
* Provide leadership for high-quality youth camping experiences.
* Build community support through a diverse and effective network
of agencies, businesses, and civic groups and maintain an effective
media program.
* Work as a member of a selected Extension Team and work to secure
additional resources to assist in solving identified problems as needed
through collaboration with WVU, school systems, grant-writing, or
private fund-raising.
* Research local needs, up-to-date teaching strategies, and subject
matter relevant to family issues, youth development, communities, and
high-risk or under-served populations
* Conduct integrated teaching, research, and service programs in
the areas of healthy lifestyles, family life, youth development,
leadership development and other identified priority areas
* Evaluate the results of teaching, research, and service in terms
of impact and improvement in knowledge, behaviors, and skills.
* Represent the WVU Extension Service in promoting greater access
to education (including higher education) by families, individuals, and
communities.
* Supervise Nutrition Outreach Instructor, 4-H Program Assistant,
and Energy Express staff
* Respond to clientele requests for information or services related
to nutrition, food safety and preservation, family life, health issues,
access to education, and other issues.
Qualifications:
A master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is
required. Educational background related to nutrition, food science,
child development, family consumer sciences, or closely related academic
field required. If the required master’s degree is not in the
specified academic field, applicants may qualify with any master’s
degree plus three years of work experience in the required fields.
Demonstrated leadership and management skill through collaborations and
partnerships with agencies and organizations is necessary. Extension or
similar work experience preferred; experience working with volunteers
desirable. Evidence of ability to use research skills, assess needs,
evaluate programs, and conduct applied research related to area of
placement is desired. Documented experience in volunteer management,
supervision, resource development, and team leadership is preferred.
Proficiency in oral and written communication and knowledge and use of
computer technology for educational programming and management are
required.
Special Requirements:
* Ability to pass a criminal background check;
* Ability to meet travel demands of position (occasional overnight
stays) for 4-H youth camps, conferences, professional development
session/trainings, etc.;
* Required to take and pass the WVU driver’s safety training
exam;
* Willingness to work flexible work hours including some nights and
weekends;
* Ability to lift and carry materials needed to conduct trainings
and perform duties of the position.
Salary:
Salary will be commensurate with professional qualifications. This is a
12-month, full-time, tenure-track position with the West Virginia
University Extension Service. The successful candidate will be evaluated
on providing a significant contribution in teaching and service and a
reasonable contribution in research with the WVU Extension Service.
Appointment is subject to the approval of the Monongalia County
Extension Service Committee.
Benefits:
Retirement program, annual (24 days annually) and sick (18 days
annually) leave, paid holidays, workers’ compensation, and the
