Registrations is open for the 2006-2007 Good Beginnings Media Institute,
workshops that will help you improve your media communications skills on
childrenĀ¹s issues and programs. Media plays a tremendous role in shaping
public opinion. Used effectively, the media can be an important tool for
promoting policies and programs that improve the well-being of children.
Participants will learn about West Virginia media and acquire skills in
preparing press releases, making pitch calls and delivering successful media
interviews. This is an opportunity to train staff, board members, volunteers
and advocates to be effective spokespersons for children.
The workshops will be led by Anne Durham from Mountainside Media. Guest
presenters include representatives of West Virginia media and Angie Cannon,
former reporter for U.S. News and World Report now working to connect
non-profit organizations to policymakers and the media.
Social work CEUs will be available through the West Virginia Prevention
Resource Center. This training has also been approved for Domestic Violence
Advocate Certification (credit hours pending.) The registration fee for the
full Institute is $35 for one person or $50 for two participants when you
register with a buddy. (Registration scholarships are available.) The
registration deadline is December 1. The first workshop will be held
December 6-7 and the second will be held February 21-22. Both workshops will
be held at the Comfort Inn and Suites Aiken Center in Martinsburg, WV.
