More details:

"The Parent as Batterer: Understanding its Effects from a
Developmental Perspective". Chatman Neely, LICSW, Senior Lecturer, WVU
Division of Social Work

Children who experience domestic violence often have an increased risk
of emotional and behavioral conditions such as suicidality, substance
abuse, depression, developmental and educational delays, attention
problems, and involvement in violence. When children see a parent being
battered they themselves are being traumatized along with the parent who
is being battered. This workshop will address how characteristics of
batterers impact child development. Participants will be introduced to
specific developmentally appropriate interventions for use with children
who experience domestic violence. Interventions are based on current
research findings, clinical case material, and therapist practice
wisdom.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the workshop, participants
will have an understanding of the batterer's impact on family
functioning and child belief systems and values; the effects of exposure
to violence on young children; how children make sense of a violent
experience; effective interventions regarding children who have
witnessed violence; effects violence has on mother-child relationships;
and, how to create a context for children's healing.
