RE: Including Field Instruction in Your Social Work
Practice
As another cohort of MSW students prepares to enter their field
placements, we invite you to participate in our training workshop for
new, potential and returning field instructors and task supervisors.
Your assignment of a student intern is largely based on your commitment
to understand your important role in the education process as well as
your agency's commitment to enter into an affiliation agreement with
WVU to serve as a field site on your behalf.
The training workshop is designed so that new and potential field
instructors can gain insights for effective supervision and instruction
beyond the material in the printed Field Manual. The workshop provides
the opportunity to network with Division faculty and other field
instructors and be recognized as a vital part of a student's learning
experience. You will receive your own copy of the Field Instruction
Manual and other useful materials to assist you in your instructional
role.
For new, potential and returning field instructors and task
supervisors, the Division of Social Work awards 5 CEUs. Ongoing field
instructors and task supervisors (who have done training within the past
three years) can earn 2 CEUs by participating in a networking lunch and
interactive session to share experiences and mentor newer colleagues.
Attached is an agenda and the workshop objectives as approved by the
West Virginia Board of Social Work Examiners.
Workshops will be held around the state in May and you may attend any
one of your choice. For networking purposes, you may be most interested
in joining us for one in your area. Please see the attached schedule
for dates and locations.

Purpose: This training is designed primarily for new and potential
field instructors and task supervisors, as well as for those field
instructors and task supervisors who need a refresher because they have
not been an active field instructor/task supervisor for one or more
years or because they initially received training more than three years
prior. The purpose of the training is to give new and potential field
instructors and task supervisors some basic knowledge and skills to
enable them, not only to direct social work students with respect to
daily tasks, but also to integrate classroom learning and practice
theories with day-to-day field activities.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this training, participants will
have knowledge to-
1. Understand the place of the field experience in social work
education;
2. Articulate the roles of the field instructor, faculty field
liaison, field instruction coordinator, and student in the experiential
learning process, including resolution of problems that may arise in the
field;
3. Develop with the student a coherent learning contract specific
to the level of field instruction (BSW, MSW Foundation, or MSW Advanced)
that relates field activities with classroom learning;
4. Conduct an effective agency orientation and weekly supervisory
meetings;
5. Identify essential theoretical content as the field placement
unfolds and incorporate this content into the experience;
6. Recognize legal and ethical issues related to having a student
in the agency setting;
7. Evaluate student performance.
